Indeed, Lupin Part 1 has smashed expectations so far, trending in Netflix’s Top Ten globally and reaching number one in France, Brazil, Vietnam, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands, the Philippines and Sweden. The series stars Omar Sy (Jurassic World) as Assane Diop. As a teen, Assane’s life changes dramatically after his father is accused of a crime he didn’t commit and dies. Part 1 follows Assane 25 years later when he is inspired use a book given to him by his father on “Arsène Lupin, Gentleman Burglar” to avenge his death. Sy was already familiar with the character of Arsène Lupin before he came aboard the show. He added “Lupin was a keen observer of society and we wanted Assane to be the same. He doesn’t need much to disguise himself: He joins the type of people who don’t get noticed, and he disappears.” Sy stars alongside Hervé Pierre (de la Comédie Française), Nicole Garcia (Who You Think I Am), Clotilde Hesme (Chocolat), Ludivine Sagnier (The New Pope), Antoine Gouy (Budapest), Shirine Boutella (Papicha) and Soufiane Guerrab (School Life) in Lupin. The show hails from the mind of Killing Eve‘s George Kay and François Uzan (Family Business). “George Kay came in with an idea we all loved,” explained Lupin director Louis Leterrier. “We wanted to see Omar in all his humanity and his experience with the myth, rather than call him Arsène Lupin and do something that had already been done.” The series is produced Gaumont Télévision, often referred to as “the oldest film company in the world.” The company is also behind other Netflix hits such as The Barbarians, Narcos and F is for Family, as well as Sky’s Tin Star. We’ll be looking out for an exact release date for Lupin Part 2!
